About
"An undisputed veteran of the Bristol reggae scene, DJ, promoter, and producer Stryda started out broadcasting his legendary Sufferah’s Choice show in 1996 on pirate stations at the tops of high rise blocks and in flats above shops, and playing at blues dances and the backs of pubs. Since these humble beginnings, Sufferah’s Choice has become the Number 1 show to hear the latest in roots and dub vinyl, with record shops all over the world tuning in to know which releases they should be stocking. UK fans can catch him alongside talent from the cutting edge of reggae at Teachings in Dub, which he started in 2007 in Room 2 of DJ Pinch’s renowned dubstep night, Subloaded. Teachings in Dub is now the main event at historic venue Trinity, and remains Bristol’s top dub night.
Stryda – alongside lifelong friend Digistep – is one half of Dubkasm, an innovative and truly global production duo, whose incredible LP Rastramentals, a meditative blend of Brazilian rhythms and deep reggae bass was released in 2018 to enormous acclaim. Their smash 12” ‘Victory’, voiced by reggae stalwarts Luciano and Turbulence and remixed by dubstep superstar Mala, exploded in DJ sets across the globe, and will be familiar to anyone who has set foot in a roots dance in the last ten years. The success of ‘Victory’ perfectly encapsulates Dubkasm’s profound understanding of and respect for roots culture while staying constantly engaged with the music of today and tomorrow. Both projects have toured extensively, with Dubkasm playing in Japan, Brookyln, Canada, Ukraine, and even Siberia, amongst many others, and Teachings in Dub appearing at numerous festivals including Love Saves the Day, Glastonbury, and Boomtown Fair. Stryda is as comfortable working with new artists such as Ashanti Selah and Joe Yorke as he is interviewing the greats like Augustus Pablo and Jah Shaka. It is this attitude that has made him a giant on the reggae scene, and the sheer breadth and pace of his knowledge and innovation means that to miss his show is to be left behind."
