As the production alias of Jim Richard, Sputnik One's music centres around weighty, percussive sounds. The Dublin based artist's songs are driving, tactile and textured, often a patchwork of samples contorted into irregular sequences, punctuated by precise machine rhythms.
S1’s discography is now five releases deep, the latest being the inaugural 12” on his own label N-Face, featuring - a limited stamped white label featuring two of his most direct club cuts yet. The first single ‘Supa Natural’ features the show-stopping talents of Belfast-based rapper EMBY - a devastating wordsmith whose nimble lines square up to Sputnik’s bass line with cold poise. Grime meets cheeky 2-step energy and mutant bass lines, all underpinned by Sputnik One’s inimitable psychedelic tech - On the flip, ‘Grafters’ balances a swung percussive core with a theremin-like rave siren for pure club devastation.
The record builds on the energy of his last four 12”s on labels like Wisdom Teeth, Well Street Records and First Second Label. With uniquely voiced and refreshingly forward-thinking bass-heavy club tracks at a range of tempos, all unified by a distinct sonic palette that pits glossy digital synths against raw organic samples and found sounds.
